The Port Phillip Gazette was trifecta of publications, both a revival and a re-interpretation of an old local newspaper from the 1850s.
Created as part of the exhibition Bellowing Echoes at Gertrude Contemporary during the 2011 Next Wave Festival. For us they were a discourse on time and the change of print design, as part of the exhibition they created a link between two periods of time, that of George Arden who was the provocation of the exhibition and the now as communicated through contemporary art.
We reinvented the original Port Phillip masthead replacing it with a contemporary typographical interpretation and slowly let the traditional tabloid design distort over the three issues.
This was a collaboration with emerging curators, Bronwyn Charteris-Bailey & Marcel Cooper, risograph printer, Xavier Connelly (Dawn Press) as well as a wide range of local and international artists.
